Remembering Those Who Served - 100 Years of WW1 Commemoration:

Rifleman Adam Baird, Service No – 42619:
Adam Baird was born during 1882 to Scottish parents Robert and Margaret Baird, who had farmed at Isla Bank where Adam grew up and went to school. His father passed away at their Limestone Plains home at the farm in 1911 and Adam continued farming there on his own account (he was definitely not a bank clerk as has been recorded in some war records). By the time he was killed during WW1, his mother had moved to the Palmerston South area, at Pleasant Valley, Goodwood, Otago, and his war medals and scroll were sent to her there. Adam had embarked on 2nd April 1917 to Plymouth in Devon on the Corinthic, as a Rifleman in the 23rd Reinforcements, J Company of the NZ Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion, but was sadly killed in action on 24th October 1918, at Le Cateau, France and he is buried at the Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.

“Rifleman Adam Baird, killed in action on October 24th, enlisted and went to the front with the 23rd Reinforcements. He was in his 35th year and was born and educated at Isla Bank, and was engaged in farming prior to going forward to fight for his King and Country.”
